Prayer Diary 23rd – 29th March
Monday
We’re now starting the last full week of Lent, running up to Palm Sunday and Holy Week.
Saturday was the spring solstice, and yesterday was World Water Day.
So two major prayer themes for this week: firstly, the culmination of Jesus’ message to us, a people in darkness mis-managing the earth with our part to play in spreading the gospel; and secondly the dire state of the world around us.
Pray today for yourself and your role in this world.
For the rest of this week, we base our prayers on Bernadette Farrel’s lovely hymn.
Tuesday
“Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
Longing for truth, we turn to you.
Make us your own, your holy people,
light for the world to see.”
Pray today that you may be a beacon of hope and truth among the people around you.
Wednesday
“Longing for peace, our world is troubled.
Longing for hope, many despair.
Your word alone has power to save us.
Make us your living voice.”
Pray today for the places in the world where there is conflict – watch the TV news – the Middle East, Ukraine, Sudan and those places like Myanmar which rarely make the news.
Thursday
“Longing for food, many are hungry.
Longing for water, many still thirst.
Make us your bread, broken for others,
shared until all are fed.”
A third of the people in the world suffer obesity, while two-thirds do not have enough to eat or clean water to drink.
Pray for justice among nations, and for all those working to alleviate suffering.
Friday
“Longing for shelter, many are homeless.
Longing for warmth, many are cold.
Make us your building, sheltering others,
walls made of living stone.”
Pray for those bringing comfort to the lonely and destitute.
Saturday
“Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
making your kingdom come.”
May we follow Christ’s way of service to those around us.
Sunday
“Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
Shine through the darkness.
Christ, be our light!
Shine in your church gathered today.”
Pray for all those gathered in Jesus’ name today, whether in church, chapel
or out on the hills and heaths.
Sing this chorus every day to round up your prayer-time.
